Sustainability Review for an Independent Brewery
“The whole process has been both worthwhile and transformative for our business.”
Martin Hodgson
Director and Head Brewer
Muswell Hillbilly Brewers

We were delighted to work with Muswell Hillbilly Brewers to produce a practical sustainability report covering their brewery, taproom and community-owned pub. The project combined carbon footprinting with a broader review of how the business creates environmental, social and economic value - from renewable electricity and low-impact packaging to local employment, community use of space and a taproom-led model that keeps supply chains short. The final report gave the business a clearer way to articulate its sustainable model, benchmark key areas of performance and identify realistic next steps for further improvement.
Client testimonial:
"Muswell Hillbilly Brewers have had the great pleasure of working with Sustainability on Tap in producing a Sustainability Report for our brewery, Taproom and Community owned Pub. The whole process has been both worthwhile and transformative for our business.
Working on this report allowed us to focus on articulating our sustainable business model and reaffirming our vision as an independent, community focussed brewery that prioritises both being different and sustainable. As a result of the discussions in producing our report we are now even more committed to sourcing local ingredients and products. We value even more having a local, sustainable staff and the importance of the London Living wage in attracting a motivated and engaged workforce that share and value our vision. We appreciate how much of a role we can play within the community and now prioritise even more the importance of hosting community events at our Taproom and Social. Most importantly we now feel confident in communicating our vision with our staff and customers and understand how their engagement with our vision can move our business forward.
We have also been challenged by the suggestions to our sustainability model made by Sustainability on Tap. These include experimenting with a wider range of new British hops; increasing plant-based offerings or partnering with suppliers for lower-carbon meat and dairy in our community kitchen; and investing in newer more energy efficient brewing equipment to improve heat retention and in future the harvesting of CO₂. Sustainability on Tap has shown us how the challenges of moving towards full sustainability are realistic and achievable.
Fred and Katy are friendly, understanding, knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. They fully understand our local context and size, and how this affects what we can and cannot do. They were both patient and determined in gathering the information required to make the report meaningful and helpful. I would fully recommend working with them to any other business involved in brewing and hospitality. Working with them has the potential to transform your business, cutting your bills, engage your staff and customers, while at the same time saving our planet!"
